Samsung Galaxy Grand vs Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 – Display, Hardware, Specs comparison

In this post, we compare the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Grand with the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8. The Samsung Galaxy Grand is the 5-inch smartphone whereas the Galaxy Mega has an even bigger screen, 5.8-inches.
Both these smartphones have a similar hardware configuration and are available in single-SIM and dual-SIM options. It will be interesting to see how similar and how different these two smartphones are. Apart from the screen size, there are a lot of things under the hood that we need to check in order to find out the better smartphone between these two.
Let us compare the specs of these two smartphones:

DISPLAY
The Samsung Galaxy Grand has a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen. It has a display resolution of 480 x 800 pixels with a pixel density of 187 ppi. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 5.8-inch Super TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a screen resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a pixel density of 190 pixels per inch ppi.

HARDWARE
The Samsung Galaxy Grand runs on a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. It has a standard GPU and 1 GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor, standard GPU and has 1.5 GB of RAM.

OPERATING SYSTEM
The Samsung Galaxy Grand runs on one of the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The device also comes with Samsung TouchWiz UI pre-installed on it.

STORAGE
The Samsung Galaxy Grand comes with a standard in-built storage space of 8 GB. It has a micro SD card support which using which you can extend the memory of your device by 64 GB. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes with in-built storage option of 8 GB only. The device also has a micro SD card support that allows you to expand the storage space by up to 64 GB.

CAMERA
The Samsung Galaxy Grand has an 8 MP Primary Camera with autofocus and LED flash, and a 2 MP Secondary Camera. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 8 MP Primary Camera with autofocus and LED flash and a 1.9 MP Secondary Camera. The camera features available include geo tagging, touch focus and face detection.

BATTERY
The Samsung Galaxy Grand has a standard 2100 mAh Li-Ion battery. It is expected to give a talk time of about 8 hours and a stand by time of about 300 hours. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 2600 mAh Li-Ion battery. As of now, we do not have the official stats for battery backup, but we expect the device to give a considerable amount of talk time and standby time.

DIMENSIONS
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy Grand are 143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6 mm whereas the dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 are 162.6 x 82.4 x 9 mm.

WEIGHT
The Samsung Galaxy Grand weighs about 162 grams whereas the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 weighs about 182 grams.

CONCLUSION
As mentioned earlier, these smartphones have a very similar hardware configuration. Both these smartphones have a lot in common – they have a 1.4 GHz dual core processor, standard GPU, 8 GB of storage space, 8 MP primary camera and an almost identical secondary camera, and pixel density.
Ironically, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a ‘little bit’ slimmer than the Galaxy Grand but has a bigger battery and is a little heavier than the Galaxy Grand. Performance wise also, there will be a very little difference. In fact, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 seems to be an enlarged version of the Galaxy Grand.
